IMSA’s Latest Indianapolis Rules: What Changes for the Next Races
IMSA teams arrived at Indianapolis with a fresh event-control package rather than a static rulebook. In the days before the TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks, IMSA published an Indianapolis-specific Balance of Performance bulletin, a related power-correction notice and Michelin issued LMP2 tire-usage requirements. Together, those documents directly affect how teams validate setup, manage tires and prove compliance this weekend.
The important distinction is that these are not broad guesses about what the rules might become. They are current, event-specific instructions issued under the 2026 IMSA regulatory structure.

The newest Indianapolis documents
IMSA’s 2026 technical bulletin index lists Technical Bulletin IWSC #26-56, dated September 10, as the Indianapolis event Balance of Performance notice. The same index lists IWSC #26-57 for the Indianapolis GTP, GTD PRO and GTD power-correction factors.
Michelin Motorsport Technical Bulletin MMTB-IWSC-2026-18, dated September 2, establishes the LMP2 tire-usage requirements for Indianapolis. It identifies the approved front and rear tire sizes and provides the operating combinations and camber limits teams must follow.
Those bulletins sit underneath IMSA’s 2026 Sporting Regulations and Series Supplementary Regulations. The regulations explicitly allow the controlling rules to be amended by competition and technical bulletins. In practical terms, a team cannot rely on the season-opening book alone. The current bulletin stack is part of the rule set.
How the changes affect Battle on the Bricks
The 2026 IMSA schedule lists the Indianapolis race for September 18–20. The WeatherTech Championship race runs 2 hours and 40 minutes on the 2.439-mile, 14-corner Indianapolis road course.
Event-specific Balance of Performance and power correction affect the performance envelope teams must work within. The engineering response is not simply to chase peak output. Teams have to confirm that calibration, sensors, logging and declared configuration agree with the bulletin while still producing a car that is consistent in traffic and over a stint.
For GTP and GT cars, small regulatory adjustments can change how aggressively a team approaches energy use, acceleration zones and tire management. The final effect depends on the exact car and class, so broad claims that one manufacturer has been “handed” an advantage should be treated cautiously until the event plays out.
For LMP2 teams, Michelin’s tire bulletin turns setup into a compliance problem as well as a performance problem. Camber, stabilized pressure and permitted tire use have to be considered together. A setup that produces a fast qualifying balance but falls outside the current operating requirement is not a usable setup.
What teams should verify before the race
- Use the latest revision. Confirm bulletin numbers, correction notices and issue dates before final setup approval.
- Match the car to its declared specification. Calibration files, logged channels, sensors and scrutineering data must agree with the current event configuration.
- Document tire settings. Cold pressure is only one part of the picture; teams need a repeatable process for stabilized pressure, camber and tire history.
- Brief the full crew. Engineers, tire personnel, mechanics and drivers should understand the event-specific limits that affect their work.
- Preserve evidence. Clean data and setup records make post-session review and technical inspection easier.
Why Indianapolis matters for Petit Le Mans
After Indianapolis, the schedule moves quickly to Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, September 30 through October 3. That race lasts 10 hours on a 2.54-mile, 12-corner circuit. Indianapolis therefore becomes both a championship event and a high-pressure systems check before the finale.
The Indianapolis BoP and power-correction values are event-specific and should not be assumed to carry into Road Atlanta unchanged. What does carry forward is the quality of the team’s process. A team that can absorb late bulletins, validate configuration, control tires and maintain reliable data will be better prepared when the Petit Le Mans event documents arrive.
