Buttonwillow CW13 Is Where Time Attack Stops Caring About Your Excuses
Time attack is the purest version of “the car is either fast or it is not.”
No drafting excuse. No traffic strategy as the main story. No battle judge.
One clean lap.
Global Time Attack returns to Buttonwillow Raceway Park in November for the 2026 Finals on the CW13 circuit, and that is exactly where this new Race Club category needs to be looking.
Buttonwillow is still one of the benchmarks
The event page calls CW13 the circuit where records are broken and championships are decided.
That is not just promotional language.
Super Lap Battle started in 2004, and Buttonwillow became one of the places where North American time attack culture built its identity.
Global Time Attack has carried that forward since 2011.
So when a car runs a serious lap there, people know what the number means.
Time attack setup is about the fastest lap, not the nicest car
A wheel-to-wheel car needs to survive traffic, repeated laps, safety-car periods and the possibility of contact.
A time attack car can optimize much harder around the one thing it actually has to do.
Make one lap as fast as possible.
That changes tire warm-up, aero, cooling, fuel load, alignment, damping and how aggressively the car can use the track.
Tire timing is everything
The perfect lap only exists if the tire is in the window at the same time the traffic gap exists and the engine is happy.
That is where time attack gets technical.
A tire that takes four laps to work can be the wrong tire even if it has more peak grip.
A tire that overheats after one flyer can be perfect if the team can hit that flyer every session.
The lap plan matters.
Aero has to work at the speed range the car actually sees
Huge wings look impressive.
The useful question is where they make load and what the car does with that load.
Front and rear balance matters more than total downforce by itself.
If the rear wing makes the car stable but the front cannot match it, the driver has a fast-looking understeer problem.
If the front splitter makes more load than the rear can support, the car can become nervous exactly where the driver needs confidence.
Cooling cannot be an afterthought just because the stint is short
Time attack cars are often making huge power in short bursts.
That means water, oil, charge-air and drivetrain temperatures can rise quickly.
Then the car sits.
Recovery between sessions becomes part of the program.
Fan strategy. Cool-down procedure. Ice tanks where allowed. Heat shielding. Air exits.
The fastest car that cannot repeat the session is not a finished time attack car.
The SDC vs NorCal fight makes the Finals more interesting
Global Time Attack added a two-round Southern California versus Northern California battle for 2026.
Round 1 ran at Thunderhill. Round 2 is the Buttonwillow Finals.
The battle covers Street and Limited classes, with points awarded through the top 10.
That is a smart addition because time attack can be too individual sometimes.
Regional pride gives people another reason to care about who is on the timing screen.
SCCA Time Attack is on the same weekend
SCCA has its Buttonwillow Time Attack Challenge scheduled for November 14-15 alongside the Global Time Attack Finale.
That creates a pretty serious concentration of time attack cars in one place.
Different rule sets. Different programs. Same basic obsession.
Find lap time.
Data is the language of the sport
Time attack is where vague driver feedback gets exposed fastest.
“It feels faster” is not enough.
Speed trace. Brake pressure. Throttle position. Steering. Lateral G. Damper position if the team has it. Tire temperatures. Sector times.
If a setup change made the driver happier but cost three tenths, the data will tell you.
One clean lap is still a driver problem
All the aero, data and power in the world still has to be executed by a person.
The driver needs to know when to push, when the tire is ready, when the lap is already gone and when to stop trying to save it with a stupid correction.
That is what makes time attack more than a dyno competition with a racetrack attached.
Buttonwillow is coming in November
The GTA event weekend is listed for November 13-15, with the core two-day Finals action on November 14-15.
Cooler November conditions. CW13. California.
That is close enough to Race Club that we should be paying attention.
And now we will be.
