A Safer Build Starts With the Right Rulebook

Safer participation starts before the car reaches the grid. This journal helps road racers and drifters find reliable safety information, understand what to check, and ask better questions before buying equipment or changing a car.

Start with the rules for your event

A useful first step is to identify the organizer, discipline, class and current rulebook. SCCA maintains its Road Racing General Competition Rules with monthly updates, alongside bulletins and memos. Use its official Cars and Rules page to find the current documents.

Formula DRIFT publishes separate PRO, PROSPEC and PROAM technical or safety documents on its official rulebook page. Choose the document that applies to your competition; a requirement from one category should not be assumed to cover another.

Build a safety plan before a shopping list

Before selecting a cage, seat, harness, helmet or other equipment, collect the applicable requirements and manufacturer instructions. Ask the organizer's technical staff about unclear requirements before committing to parts or fabrication.

• Record the series, class and rulebook revision used for your build.
• Keep equipment model numbers, labels and installation documents together.
• Plan time for inspection and any required corrections before your event.
• Recheck official updates when the event approaches.
